Nuovo Kotel

71 x 29 x 29 cm

High-fired, normal and red semi-refractory clays with white tin glaze
Ceramiche Il Tondo, Celle Ligure

This piece revisits, in a modern vein, the most sacred of all Jewish sites, the Kotel, the Western Wall, commonly known as the Wailing Wall. From here it takes its title of Nuovo (New) Kotel. The shamash is set outside of the lamp, while the eight candle holders are within the pyramid. The structure is covered in “splotches” of two shades of nutbrown clay, which could almost be the rounded tiles of a mosaic that offer offer glimpses of the black and orange support underneath.
