Il melograno

15 x 25 x 25 cm

Single sandstone block, wood, bronze

This work, carved from a single piece of sandstone – hollowed out with a hammer and chisel – represents a pomegranate tree. The fruits are cut in half, each with a hole in the centre to hold a candle. Leaves grow around the branches giving a lively, varied colouration. The central trunk is made of acacia wood, while the tube that accommodates the shamash is a bronze piece from a late nineteenth-century musical instrument. On the sides of the octagonal base, the word “peace” is carved in low relief in eleven different languages (clockwise): Hebrew, French, Latin, Arabic, English, Russian, Italian, German, Greek, Spanish and Albanian. On the underside are the day, month and year of production, and the artist’s signature, GIAC.
