The base is formed from a series of hand-painted, wrought-iron spirals which support nine wax candles and the Torah – the Jewish bible. This latter element is modelled in terracotta and painted with the words, “(Let) these lights be sacred to you”, to transmit a message of hope, faith and optimism. The shamash is at the centre and further to the front than the other lights.
