“Shadow is created by light”: a concept that the artist explores in his preferred field of expression, photography. The wooden base of this piece generate the shadow of a hanukkiah, indeed the true subject of this hanukkiah. Indeed the subject here is the shadow of this very hanukkiah. Thus the work takes on an ambivalent quality – from which it derives its title. It is possible to turn the piece on its side, and the image continues to depict the shadow, as though there was always a light source on hand to create it. The artificial lights in the base pay homage to the festival of Hanukkah; the “candles” can be lit in the traditional sequence.
