Iron, calcarenite sandstone from the quarries of Matera and wax
Officina Frascella
The artwork, made by a group of architects from Matera, consists of an iron base on which eight blocks of calcarenite sandstone rest, recalling the stones with which the ancient workers built the city of Matera. The blocks have a square base, which symbolizes the Earth, inside which a cylinder was hollowed to house the candles. The circle symbolizes the celestial vault. Two sinuous iron bars flank the blocks, their flowy shape evoking water and, therefore, the passage of time that has slowly shaped our civilization and the ancient city of Matera. The work culminates with a Meteoron, which represents the shamash, the attendant, and a candle made in the unmistakable shape of the city of Matera. This hanukkiah expresses the union between heaven and earth and spiritual transcendence.
