Terracotta

The hanukkiah is composed of columns of books in terracotta: eight are identical in height and one, the shamash, is larger and taller. The surface of these columns is decorated with alternating bands of smoother or more decorated surface, to give the impression of books of different thicknesses and with different bindings. At the base of the nine candle holders, resting against them as if to hold them up, are nine small figures, one for each column. The figures are seen from the back with their arms extended as if supporting the books. At the top of each column is a circular hook that supports a candleholder.
