Memoria di Luce

150 x 21 x 33 cm

Untreated driftwood, tempera. Base in polished fir, corner brackets in iron

The work is conceived as a driftwood branch, stripped bare by the sea and corroded by some salt. It withstands the pounding of the elements, holding within it a powerful light: wood that burns from within. The shamash sits at the top of the branch, a tiny presence that will continue to burn without consuming it, a flame that generates new light. Eight other torches, like ribs, curve around to protect the original light and provide new life. The artist has conceived a primitive, symbolic work. A bare stick signifies the capacity to withstand adversity. It carries within it a memory of constant renewal; the tree of life from which light can spring.
